BASIC COURSES

Basic course 1: Reflexive Writing  (7, 5 hp)
The course consists of lectures designed to highlight and discuss a range of research writing practices. Possible topics for discussion: What function does writing have in artistic research and in research on education within the artistic field? What can an research text look like? How can one think on the relationship between artistic and scientific writing in an artistic or edacation research practice?

The course links writing to issues of method, ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, ontology and artistic and scientific processes and visions. The course consists of lectures, writing tutoring groups, workshops and examining writing assignments.

In the writing tutoring groups, the participants meet in small groups, in which we train to give and receive constructive criticism on texts. The course is thus foucsing both on writing and reading.

The teaching will be held in English but the participants can write their texts either in English or Swedish.

A starting point for the course is to enable participants to work with ongoing writing projects.

The course is given by Valand Academy for the Research School, a collaboration between the three departments Academy of Music and Drama, HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts, and Valand Academy.

Course Syllabus

Basic course 2: On Research Methods and Research Design

The course – delivered through English – is a primer in core research competencies at doctoral level that addresses research constructs; the organization of knowledge; and different ways of constructing questions of method, methodology and research design across the creative arts. The course introduces and historicises the contested constructs of research within the art field and within the university more generally. It examines the description of the researcher role with reference to research ethics and the rhetorical construct of ‘ethos’. It introduces soem of the different ways in which knowledge practices and the interpretation of knowledge formations have been described, critiqued and re-interpreted in current debates in the arts. It introduces key concepts such as “discipline” and "research" in a critical-historical framework. It introduces the question of research method and methodology including practical strategies of method disclosure and the “anti”-method positions of some authors.

There are three themes that run through the course:
research constructs – different ways in which research is described, defined and contested
the organization of knowledge – a historical / critical analysis of knowledge organisation
madness in the method – a survey of issues that arise in the attempt to disclose method as part of a research process

The course is given by Valand Academy for the Research School, a collaboration between the three departments Academy of Music and Drama, HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts, and Valand Academy.

Course leader: Dr Mick Wilson, researcher at Valand Academy.
