Staffan Rydén to be the new Head of the Academy of Music and Drama

News: Nov 26, 2009

Staffan Rydén, production manager at Dramaten - the Royal Dramatic Theatre - is to be the new Head of the Academy of Music and Drama, at the University of Gothenburg. He will take up his post on February 15th 2010.

Staffan Rydén has had a number of managerial posts in the Swedish opera and theatre world for many years now. He was among those who founded Folkoperan (the People’s Opera) in Stockholm, where he worked for twenty years. During the last thirteen years, he has been assistant managing director at Dramaten, and has been its production manager for quite some time.

- I look forward to being able to use my 20 years of experience from the opera world and what is soon to be my 13 years of experience from the theatre world in order to devote myself to the young students who will soon perform in our theatres, opera houses and concert halls, and to be responsible for the education of our next generation of musicians, Staffan Rydén comments.

The Academy of Music and Drama has undergone extensive changes in its organisation during the last few years. The new Head will not only focus on leadership but also on the task of continuing to realise the vision the Academy has set forth.

Staffan Rydén has a Bachelor of Social Science from Uppsala University, where he has also started to pursue doctoral studies. At Folkoperan, he was active both as a singer and as an administrator, and as a managing director for thirteen years. In 1997, Staffan Rydén was appointed assistant theatre manager to Ingrid Dahlberg at Dramaten. In 2002, he was appointed assistant managing director under Staffan Valdemar Holm, who was theatre manager at that time. Since the spring of 2009, Staffan Rydén has worked as production manager at Dramaten, where he has had overall responsibility for the theatre’s productions, guest performances and tours. He serves on several committees, such as the Folkoperan Foundation Committee and the Dalhalla Friends Association Committee.

When Helena Wessman, the former Head of the Academy, was appointed managing and artistic director of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra at the Gothenburg Concert Hall last Spring, the recruitment of a new Head has been carried out in different sectors of the artistic world. On the basis of a recommendation from a recruitment group, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, Anna Lindal, has now made her decision to appoint Staffan Rydén as the new Head:
- I think it’s splendid that the Academy of Music and Drama has, yet again, been so successful in their recruitment efforts and I am grateful for the work that has been put into this process by the recruitment group. Staffan Rydén has many years of deep experience from different dramatic arts institutes and therefore has unique competence to lead the Academy of Music and Drama.
- I am extremely happy and proud to be able to welcome him to the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts in Gothenburg, says Anna Lindal.
