New Platform To Link International Research Stars To the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts

News: Nov 13, 2013

The names of the international group of artists, musicians, philosophers and designers – who, together with representatives from the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg, are to engage in artistic research being developed and renewed by way of a new, state-of-the-art Conference and Publication Platform – will be announced today.

The Dean of the Faculty, Ingrid Elam, says: We have now reached a point in time when we need to deepen our approach to artistic research, and put in to words, and formulate, how artistic research can contribute to the understanding and solving of some of the great social challenges we are facing today.

This new platform will act as a starting point for the Faculty to carry out important events that will enable the development of international artistic research,as well as to support staff who wish to publish their research in new formats.

We can now build a research culture where we are open to discussing issues with critical friends, that is, with national and international representatives of artistic research and other research who are curious to know about our efforts in this endeavour. This is how we hope to be able to develop this field at the same time as we develop our own research environment, Ingrid Elam adds.

The main function of the platform is to encourage and promote dialogue, and spread the content of this dialogue in ways that are completely new. When more meeting places and discussion spaces are created, the intersection that already exists – between the different arts arenas in Gothenburg and research – can also be further developed and expanded.

Mick Wilson, Head of Department at the Valand Academy, says the following: The field of artistic research has been growing fast over the last two decades, and has now acquired considerable stability and academic recognition. But the potentialities of this new research are immense, and we are still just beginning to chart the contribution that the research initiatives of the arts will make to a wide range of societal challenges.

Two groups make up the core of this project; these are: an Advisory Board comprising international researchers who will support the project, and assist in the development of a peer review culture for artistic research, and an Editorial Board comprising eminent colleagues from Sweden and Finland, who, together with the working group at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, will provide editorial supervision and proofreading.

The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts is very proud and happy to be able to present the names that are now to be linked to the University of Gothenburg, which by way of the Faculty’s new platform will steer artistic research into the future:
