New organisation at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, the University of Gothenburg

News: Oct 20, 2011

On Wednesday 12th October 2011 a decision was taken to form a new department structure at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, the University of Gothenburg. The decision to reorganise the Faculty into three departments was a unanimous one. Work to form the new organisation is now underway.

The Faculty Board’s decision means that there will be three departments at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts from 1st July 2012. Today the Faculty is made up of the following schools and departments: the Valand School of Fine Arts, the School of Design and Crafts, the School of Film Directing, the School of Photography, the Academy of Music and Drama, Steneby, the School of Craft and Design, and the Department of Literary Composition, Poetry and Prose.

The three new departments will be made up of the subject areas that are offered at the above- mentioned schools/departments today. The process to find names for the three new departments is underway and can now gain momentum as a result of the Faculty Board’s decision. Below, the departments have been given the working names: departments X, Y and Z.

Result of a Faculty-wide development project

The decision to form a three-department structure is the result of extensive development work at the Faculty; this work began at the beginning of 2010. The aim of this organisational reform is to strengthen department level and to create the conditions necessary to develop high-quality disciplinary and interdisciplinary education and research.
Extensive work within the Faculty Development Project – in the form of internal subprojects, internal discussions, and the creation of the Faculty Vision – together with the work that is currently underway at the University to carry out an organisational reform, has led to this decision.

Leaders for realisation work

Work to carry out this organisational reform at the Faculty is now in progress and Anna Lindal, Dean of the Faculty, has appointed leaders for this task. The Faculty’s regular everyday activities will run parallel to this work.
At Department X (today’s Academy of Music and Drama) and Department Y (today’s School of Design and Crafts and Steneby – School of Craft and Design), the present Heads of Schools, Staffan Rydén, Eva Engstrand and Jeff Kaller, will be responsible for the work to realise the formation of these new departments.

Maria Hirvi-Ijäs is to lead the work to realise the formation of Department Z (today’s Valand School of Fine Arts, School of Film Directing, School of Photography, and the Department of Literary Composition, Poetry and Prose). Maria Hirvi-Ijäs (born in 1962), who has a PhD in Art History, was Rector at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki from 2007 to 2009 and Professor of the Theory of Art and the History of Ideas at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm from 2005 to 2007. Maria Hirvi-Ijäs has also worked as a curator at Kiasma, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, and is presently working as an art researcher and as the chief editor of the magazine Taide & Design.

- Maria Hirvi-Ijäs’s experience as a researcher and as a rector of higher arts education provides her with the necessary qualities and qualifications to carry out this task, says Anna Lindal, Dean of the Faculty. In the dialogue we have had prior to this task, Maria Hirvi-Ijäs has demonstrated not only great awareness of what this task involves but also a dedication that inspires confidence.

- I consider there to be great potential in the collaborative task that has been set and a very positive spirit among all those involved, says Maria Hirvi-Ijäs. The idea is that processes that have worked previously are to be further strengthened, and that new, even unexpected, ideas of some substance are to be formulated within the new department.

Announcements of vacancies for the positions of Heads of Departments to the new departments are to be advertised during the autumn. The new organisation will come into force on 1st July 2012.
