Valand Academy’s longstanding member Hans Hedberg has passed away on March 3 after a brief illness. His importance at the Academy has been profound, both as the Head of Department (Prefect), from 2000 to 2002, and as a teacher and head of research within photography.

As the Dean for the Facutly of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg, between 2002 and 2008, he developed several important strategic questions. With his vast knowledge in both the artistic field and art education, Hans Hedberg contributed to the development of artistic research, nationally and internationally.

Hans Hedberg’s work as an editor, writer, curator and teacher at Konstfack in the 90s has had a significant impact on the Swedish art scene. Notably, in the establishment of photography within contemporary art, and in the development of critical dialogues about art and photography in a wider cultural and historical perspective. Hans Hedberg’s thoughts, movements, and artistic practice were the first to be formulated in the international arena. His own artistic research project financed by the Swedish Research Council, 'Mått Mätt Mot' concerns the conditions between theoretical ideas of predictability and lifeworld. A project that now remains unfinished.

Friends, colleagues and students at Valand Academy will miss Hans Hedberg, a person with unwavering commitment and a passion for art and learning. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
