Dean´s letter March 2018

News: Mar 16, 2018

Dear colleagues,

Spring is keeping us waiting, and yet it always comes sooner or later. Such is the way of things with proposals from the Faculty Management Group too!

Proposal of roles and meetings at the new HDK-Valand department

At the beginning of March the Faculty Management Group’s proposal of role descriptions and meeting structure at the new department was published, and today we aslo published the proposal of how research is to be organised.

We are now hoping to receive a lot of responses from all staff – in the form of comments, proposals of things to change, proposals of things to add. Please submit your points of view by the 20th of April at the latest.

In the next few days a proposal of how research is to be organised at the department is also to be published and later this spring a proposal of the administrative structure at the new department. You can read more about this on the Faculty website.

More information concerning HDK-Valand

Before this merger takes place the Faculty Management Group will try and create financial stability for the programmes that are to be offered during the two years that are to follow this merger. We will therefore analyse what these programmes need in terms of the budget for operating and running them, so as to then establish an operational budget per programme that is to apply for the period: 2019-2021.

More information concerning Konst 2025 – Arts 2025

In May, Akademiska Hus (Sweden’s leading property company for universities and colleges) is to submit a report of the pilot study they have carried out regarding future premises for the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts – which is of course important documentation on which a decision can be made with regard to us moving into a co-located Faculty building near Götaplatsen.

The new Administrative Manager for the merged Valand-HDK department is to be recruited this spring, and will commence his or her employment before Christmas this year already. A recruitment group consisting of representatives from the administration at HDK – School of Design and Crafts and Valand Academy has been drawn up and will be led by Mark Wennerström, Head of the Faculty Office.

The recruitment of a Head of Department for the new department is underway, and he or she will be starting as Valand Academy’s Head of Department in January 2019 to then become the new department head in 2020.

The Faculty Management Group has also decided what form the general process for drawing up a name for the new department is to take.

Election of new Faculty Board- Electoral Roll

For those of you who are entitled to vote in the election for a Dean, Pro-Dean and other Faculty Board members – have you checked that your name is on the electoral roll? In order to be entitled to vote you must have been employed 40 per cent of a full-time equivalent during a period of at least two years, and this applies to all staff categories. Doctoral students and students are not entitled to vote; they appoint three representatives to the Faculty Board through the Faculty’s students’ union: Konstkåren.

The Election Nominating Committee’s proposals regarding a new Dean, Pro-Dean and other board members will be presented on the Faculty website in April. Voting will be carried out online. More information can be found at konst.internt.se.

Presentation of the plan for the Näckrosen area

The common plan that the University of Gothenburg and Akademiska Hus has drawn up for the entire Näckrosen area is to be presented. All staff at the Faculty are invited to attend an information meeting at Gamla hovrätten on the 21st of March. A lunch sandwich will be served to the first 100 – first come first served. An exhibition of posters will be on show until the 27th of March.

The University of Gothenburg’s Annual Report for 2017

The University of Gothenburg’s Annual Report is now available. Fun to read about all the things we achieved last year! Among new programmes developed last year, the new bachelor’s programme in Literary Composition is one of three examples mentioned. Our Faculty is also mentioned in very positive terms with regard to the report of bachelor’s degrees awarded, where there was a 70% increase on our part, as well as with regard to widening access to, and participation in, higher education, to our recruitment of staff – and in a number of other places in the report. The annual report can be read on the University website.

Promotion applications to take time

The Academic Appointments Board (lärarförslagsnämnden) has received an unusually large number of promotion applications, and more are to be announced during the spring. This means that a large number of external experts are to be contacted, and to agree to their assignments, which may take a long time since we have rather a narrow circle of potential experts in our subjects – who are also very much in demand, especially now when we also have a number of recruitments underway, and which must be prioritised. If you have applied for promotion – we ask for your patience.

Vacancy for a new Faculty Director of Education

We are seeking a new Director of Education to the Faculty. Please help us spread the advertisement in your network, or maybe you are interested in applying? The last date of application is the 29th of March.

Nominate to the Pam Fredman Award

The newly established Pam Fredman Award (a maximum of 50,000 SEK) will go to a researcher and/or teacher at the University of Gothenburg who has made valuable contributions to social sustainability and lifelong learning. All students and staff at the University are allowed to nominate. Nominations to be submitted by the 31st of March at the latest.

Share in the PARSE event on artistic research

The Art and Work Reading Group starts next week. If you are interested in sharing in and discussing current artistic research, this is an event you shouldn’t miss. The Intersectional Engagements Reading Group has its second meeting on the 10th of April. Hagar Kotef from SOAS London will be our guest at the PARSE Dialogue on the 28th of March when the exciting title of her talk will be: Violence, Desire, and Settler Colonialism.

A warm welcome to everyone – both at the Faculty and outside the Faculty!

Ingrid Elam, Dean

The Dean’s Letters are published in the news archive at the staff portal for the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, in Swedish and in English. They are also published as a pdf on the Faculty’s external website, under the headline "Dean and Prodean". An email with a link is sent to all staff at the faculty.
