Dean´s letter January 2018

News: Jan 15, 2018

Dear colleagues,

Hope that 2018 has begun well for you all and that you are looking forward to the approaching Spring season. As for the Faculty Management, the year has begun with a two-day meeting where we continued our work on the time plan and other details regarding the re-organisation of our Faculty.

The new HDK-Valand department

On January 12th, all Faculty staff were invited to an information meeting where we described how units are to be divided in the new department and the steps that are now ahead of us during the spring. HDK’s and Valand Academy’s Management Groups will continue to meet and work on how their merging is to continue. At the end of February, the Faculty Management Group will send out a proposal of further details, such as roles, meeting structure and how work related to education and research is to be organised. We hope to obtain good feedback on this proposal from all staff before a final decision is to be made shortly before our summer break. More info on the Faculty website (including all points of view received so far).

Hearing with the Minister for Higher Education and Research regarding harassment

That same day, together with principals and deans from all the country’s higher arts education programmes of study in artistic subjects, I was called to the Ministry of Education for a discussion on sexual harassment in artistic programmes. The Minister for Higher Education and Research: Helen Hellemark Knutsson began the discussion with a description of the present situation and the problems that occur, after which she presented a report to those representing all of the country’s higher education institutions with degree-awarding powers to award artistic degrees; this report included the measures to be taken, experiences, and plans for how to deal with sexual harassment, and maybe, above all, how we can change the culture and the working environment . The meeting thus provided us with both an exchange of experiences and ideas.

Minister for Culture and Democracy to visit the Academy of Music and Drama on January 26th

On January the 26th, Alice Bah Kuhnke, the Minister for Culture and Democracy, will be visiting the Academy of Music and Drama. All staff and students at the Faculty are welcome to a panel debate with the minister on Friday January 26:th, 13.00-14.30 in Sjöströmsalen at HSM.

Contract regarding pilot study for new rooms and premises now finalised

It’s also nice to be able to say that the University has now written a contract with Akademiska Hus, Sweden’s leading property company for universities and colleges, who are to carry out a pilot study regarding rooms and premises for the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts. Three different alternatives are to be investigated:

  1. That we remain in our present premises, which are renovated and rebuilt
  2. That we are co-located in a new building adjoining the Academy of Music and Drama, i.e. a modification of the architects’ Tham and Widegård’s proposal.
  3. That we are co-located in a new building adjoining the Academy of Music and Drama, approximately in accordance with the the architects’ Tham and Widegård’s proposal.

Clarification: Since we received many questions we add a clarification. Scenario 1, to stay in our existing premises, is mainly investigated to allow us to compare the cost for a new building with the cost of staying. It would not be accurate to say that not moving would´t cost anything. The aim and vision of Art 2025 is still to move into a common house, such as scenario 2 or 3.

As a result of this we can take new steps in the work to finalise the allocation of space and premises and the actual co-location of space and premises. More info on website.

Recruitment of Head of Department for Valand Academy 2019

Work has begun to recruit a new Head of Department for Valand Academy, who will start work in January 2019, and from the 1st of January 2020 will also be the Head of Department for the new HDK/Valand department. A drafting committee and representatives from both departments have already started their work here, and this vacancy will be advertised at the end of this week. Please help us to spread this information so that we have many good applicants applying! Please go to: Lediga tjänster GU/Vacancies.

The University of Gothenburg’s new Research Board and evaluation of research underway

Mick Wilson has been appointed to represent the Faculty in the University of Gothenburg’s newly established Research Board (information in Swedish only).

The University’s evaluation of research and research environments, RED19, is to be launched this year. The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts will have a common external panel who will be working during the spring of 2019; names have already been proposed. Before that we will work on self-evaluation, among other things. Anders Hultqvist is our representative in the RED19 reference group, and Hanna Hallgren is his substitute.

A ‘fika’ of coffee, tea and buns now being served again at the Academy of Music and Drama

It will take further time for the HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts’ café to open owing to Eurest Restaurant Services planning to rebuild the cafe before activities here can start. However, at the Academy of Music and Drama, the cafe has now opened again so that you can take a cup of coffee/tea and a bun with colleagues or students!
