News: Aug 03, 2015

Andrei Venghiac "From Memory Alone", 2014-2015

A new meeting place for artists and audience opens on August 12 at Kungsportsavenyn 25 in Gothenburg. Through a mix of artistic expressions the place will provide a new esthetic, intellectual and challenging initiative in the cultural life of Gothenburg.

The new platform A-venue is a collaboration between the Valand Academy, the School of Design and Crafts and the Academy of Music and Drama, all artistic departments at the University of Gothenburg.

The programme stretches over 243 days and will be officially opened on Wednesday, August 12 at 16-20.

Project coordinator for A-venue is artist John Huntington, who says that the idea is to provide a mix of different art forms and genres from the artistic educations.

John Huntington hope that the cross-disciplinary collaboration between the artistic departments will create new expressions and positions.

- The programme will present a constructively critical approach to the current development in society and the city.

The new location opens with an exhibition

During the official opening exhibition five projects from the three artistic departments are presented. The different works provide a width of expressions and themes with common interests, such as the strive for belonging and affiliation.

Benedikte Esperi, master student in Contemporary Performative Arts at the Academy of Music and Drama, presents a performance during the opening night. She describes her encounter with the viewer as an important aspect of her artistic work, and stresses that every opportunity to promote performance art is important.

- A-venue is not the traditional format for Performing Arts, which creates space for ideas about how, what and when the type of art I make are displayed. The location is easily accessible from several perspectives and it is of great importance in this context, says Benedikte Esperi.

The public programme at A-venue is free and open to all interested to attend. John Huntington describes the project as an experimental activity, a meeting between the art academy and the city.

- It will be an active place, where there is always something going on, where art forms and genres are mixed and strengthens each other. The intention is to produce a generous meeting between artists and audience.
