Art historian from Massachusetts Fulbright Fellow at HDK

News: Nov 27, 2018

The crafts and design historian Ezra Shales will be spending time at HDK from December 2018 to May 2019 as a researcher and guest lecturer supported by a grant from the Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship.

During his time at HDK Ezra Shales will undertake research about the history of exhibitions held at the Röhsska Museum. He is going to evaluate how staged presentations of the ideal modern home have presented handicraft and addressed the issue of the conditions of its production.

In addition to his own research Ezra will deliver a series of open lectures and a seminar for the master students in crafts at HDK.

- It will be exciting to contribute to the programmes in craft, and in conceiving the field as an international dialogue, says Ezra Shales.

Usually Ezra Shales teaches the history of design and craft at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. As an art historian with focus on crafts and design, Ezra Shales examines handicraft in manufacturing, and the paradoxical ways that public discourse either disregards or exaggerates conditions of its production.
