A large, new craft scholarship

News: Nov 04, 2010

The scholarship of SEK 100,000 – JL Eklunds Great Crafts Scholarship, is presented on Wednesday evening, November 3 at the Blue Hall, Stockholm City Hall. The scholarship goes to a 28-year-old blacksmith Gustav Thane, who runs a blacksmith workshop in Ryfors, where he works with artistic design, design and artisan production of hot forging.

Gustav Thane graduated from Iron & Steel/ public space at Steneby- The school of Craft and Design- in 2009 and is today the only active blacksmith in Sweden, who has both the journeyman's certificate in blacksmithing and master's degree in arts and crafts. He was awarded the scholarship to further development and to extend the investigations of craft techniques and production functions in the so-called liturgical wrought.

Heiner Zimmermann, the professor at Iron & Steel/ public space, University of Gothenburg, gives these arguments for the nomination: "Gustav's choice to work with the utility and theoretical arguments has been given a unique development of crafts as a cultural property. Crafts irreplaceable role in his reasoning is a way to revamp how we relate to technologies and natural resources today. In this way, Gustav Thane succeeded in developing an understanding of historical techniques to make them relevant, interesting and quite irreplaceable in today's society ".

Behind the scholarship is J.L. Eklunds Crafts Foundation, which since its inception in 1939 has awarded nearly 40 million of which about 20 million just in the last ten years and this year decided to also award a major scholarship every two years to one particularly deserving young artisans for further advancement in the profession.
