Ruben Östlund, professor at the University of Gothenburg Academy Valand, wins the worlds' most prestigious film prize, the Palm d'Or for his film The Square.

It has been 25 years since a Swedish film last was awarded the Palm d'Or, the Cannes Film Festival's finest prize.

– It´s wonderful news, it´s a huge achievement by Ruben Östlund and the team behind The Square. We are so happy for everyone involved in the film and we feel privileged at the Academy Valand, beeing able to follow Ruben's work so close, says Klara Björk, associate professor and head of the Academy Valand's unit for film.

The Square is a satirical drama that takes place in the art world. It addresses questions about community, civil courage and self-centeredness. The film is produced by Erik Hemmendorff, who, like Ruben Östlund, is educated at the University of Gothenburg. On August 25th, The Square will be shown at Swedish cinemas.
