Bass Trombone, Breaking Waves and Symphonic Dances

Munktell: Bränningar
Séjourné: Concerto for Marimba and Strings
Bernstein: On the Waterfront
Rachmaninov: Symphonic dances
University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra with conductor Nick Davies. Matyas Standovar, marimba

In Bernstein's On the Waterfront from the movie with the same name, we hear pulsating barbaric motifs in contrast with tragic songs of mourning.
Munktell's Bränningar (Breaking waves) is one of the earliest picturesque depictions of the sea in Swedish music.
Symphonic dances, the last piece Rachmaninov composed, represents the composer's late style with curiously shifting harmonies and a focus on the tonal qualities of individual instruments.

Nota bene: Our printed seasonal programme announced Lebedev's Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra as a part of this evenings repertoir. However, this work has been replaced by Séjourné's Concerto for Marimba and Strings.
