Fierce Passengers

Lecture

Artist Linda Sormin explores upheaval, fragility, migration and change through sculpture and site-responsive installation.

Ceramics whips through the second decade of this century, upturning notions of 'discipline', resisting long-held values. Fine lines scatter: inter-, cross-, multi-, non-... Have skill and fluency run aground? What is worth risking in making space for newness? Is clay sintering or simpering under the hot lights of contemporary galleries, art fairs and biennales? What opportunities might be lost or found at a time when bucking is the trend?

These questions persist, as Linda Sormin makes sculpture and installations by hand. In this talk she will share her process and continue to dig toward answers.

Born in Bangkok, Linda Sormin immigrated to Canada at the age of five. After working in non-profit, community development for four years in Thailand and Laos, she studied ceramics at Andrews University, Sheridan College and Alfred University (MFA '03).

Sormin¿s most recent immersive work, 'Fierce Passengers', was installed at CUAG (Ottawa, Canada) in 2018. Sormin exhibits internationally, most recently at Art Toronto (Canada), Patricia Sweetow Gallery (San Francisco ) and CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark (Middelfart), Wuchangshuo Memorial Hall (Shanghai, China), Jogja National Museum (Yogyakarta, Indonesia). Sormin is Associate Professor of Studio Art at New York University. lives and works in New York, NY.
