Research profile seminar

25 % seminar. An intervention through the Weaving Kiosk, visits in weaving spaces and historical research.

This PhD study takes place in the realm of the mundane practice of leisure time hand weaving in urban environments in Sweden, Finland and Denmark. It seeks to understand why today we should continue weaving by hand, when the production of textiles as use objects is achieved both faster and more cheaply by the industry.

Hand weaving might be an unnecessary action in contemporary society in terms of material production, but what else is produced in a weaving space? This project is not about the development of physical products or small-scale crafts business, but about exploring other kinds of values created through making in the weaving space.

The purpose of the doctoral research is to generate knowledge about whether hand weaving can foster healthy social interaction, including building individual selfesteem through the experience of physical anchoring in contemporary urban society. Methodically I aim to assess if practice-based research methods can add specific value for generating this knowledge.
