A History of Levitation

Lecture, Exhibition

Despite many eyewitness and photographs, there is no scientific evidence that levitation is a real phenomenon. But it triggers the thought.

On Friday, September 15, HDK will make an in-depth study on the subject through the book release A Guide to Gravity's End - A Study of Free Fall and Levitation, the exhibition Cabinet of Gravity and the lecture A History of Levitation by Aaron Schuster.

The artists Theo Ågren and Björn Hegardt have been working with the artistic development project A Study of Free Fall and Levitation for four years. In the project, they have focused on gravity and with an artistic approach they have explored the phenomenon of levitation.

It has resulted in a number of installations and exhibitions, and ends up with the publication of an artist book: A Guide to Gravity's End - A Study of Free Fall and Levitation. The book contains different texts on the phenomenon as well as many pictures. Contributors are the artists themselves, writer Mikael Löfgren, philosopher and writer Aaron Schuster, art critic and writer Ann-Charlotte Glasberg Blomqvist, and Helena Scragg, curator. The book is published in a very limited and numbered edition and is not for sale, but during the release some copies of the book will be raffled among those who come.

In conjunction with the release of the book, the artwork Cabinet of Gravity will be shown. The work is a collection of objects, like a curiosity cabinet that shows some of the objects included in the project.

The lecture A History of Levitation will be about the phenomenon of levitation, which simply means that something raises from the ground and floats freely. Aaron Schuster has researched the history of levitation in the history of art, in 2009 he published the essay The Cosmonaut of the Erotic Future: A History of Levitation. The Essay is also part of A Guide to Gravity's End - A Study of Free Fall and Levitation.

The lecture will be held in English.
