Conference on Dissertations in Artistic Research

What have we done and how do we go from here? Artistic research seen through the lens of doctoral dissertations.

We invite institutions in Sweden engaged in artistic research and education to a one-day seminar to present dissertations that have been produced and presented within their programs. We see it as a "Bench Marking" project where we together look at good examples from the point of view of how the dissertations deal with and develop the relation between practice and theory, and other meta-reflections.

Valand Academy, Gothenburg
10th December
9.00-17.30, followed by a dinner and informal discussions.

Please register at the latest 1st of December

The symposium is free of charge.
We welcome researchers, staff and doctorands from all Swedish institutions engaged in artistic research and education.

One way of identifying what artistic research has contributed to, is to revisit and look closely at dissertations that have been produced in the field. This can help us identify how research questions, methods and results are formulated, and what it is that characterizes the artistic research in its different subjects.

How is the "research question" presented and discussed? How have methods been used and developed in the examples? Another issue that we would like to share and discuss is how the dissertations are distributed and made public.

The symposium is arranged by the Research School and will take place at Valand Academy 10th December between 9.00-17.30, followed by a dinner and informal discussions. We have scheduled 10 presentations, each 20 minutes plus 10 minutes of questions and comments. After the presentations - and lunch and coffee breaks - there will be a session of one and a half hour for discussions.

The symposium is open for researchers, staff and doctorands.

Please, let us know if you would like to contribute with a presentation no later than 12th October. The number of slots is limited. The presentations can be in English or Swedish, but the English is preferred. For the final program we need a short description of the thesis you are presenting, and links to the online version of the thesis and documentation of the artistic work. Please mention if you need any particular technique or other facilities for the presentation. Deadline for this information is 5th November.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact Niclas Östlind.

Looking forward seeing you 10th December!
