Information meeting for newcomers with refugee background

Research profile seminar

On September 12, the seventh information meeting for newcomers with refugee background is held in the university's main building in Vasaparken.

The meetings are primarily intended for newcomers with refugee background who have completed upper secondary and/or have started university studies. Many experience the Swedish education system, application and admission processes to higher education as complicated. These information meetings aim to facilitate decision making and the design of a personal plan regarding the different pathways into higher education and/or the labor market. The University of Gothenburg provides support and guidance early in the establishment process with the help of interpreters and in collaboration with Arbetsförmedlingen, Chalmers University of Technology and Intergrationscentrum.

The first information meeting was held in February last year. Since then, five meetings have been arranged with more than 320 participants from Gothenburg and the surrounding municipalities. The meetings are held twice per semester and are interpreted in several languages, including Arabic and Somali. After the meeting, participants are offered opportunities to book individual sessions and almost every third participant has signed up for these.
