All the Arts within a Real University

The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts offers programmes and research in artistic subjects. We collaborate with the Faculty of Education on teacher education in the arts and crafts, as well as on research in arts education.

In January 2020 our two departments Valand Academy and Academy of Design and Crafts, HDK, will merge and form a new department for art and design; HDK-Valand.

Valand Academy

Film, photography, fine art or literary composition.

Academy of Design and Crafts, HDK

Design and Crafts in ceramics, metal, wood, jewelry and textile.

Academy of Music and Drama, HSM

Music in many different genres, composition, opera, musical theatre, performance and acting.

Campus Steneby

Campus Steneby is located in Dals Långed. HDK have educations at Steneby.


  • Thomas Ostermeier and Hito Steyerl to be new honorary doctors at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts

    [22 May 2019] Thomas Ostermeier, theatre director and artistic director for the Schaubühne theatre in Berlin, and Hito Steyerl, artist, filmmaker and Professor of Experimental Film and Video at the Berlin University of the Arts, have been appointed as honorary doctors at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, the University of Gothenburg.

    [10 Apr 2019] What is practice-based literary research? Fredrik Nyberg, senior lecturer in literary composition at Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg, is one of 16 writers who are looking closer the subject in a new book.

  • HDK students at the Milan Design Week

    [8 Apr 2019] Swedish Design Moves returns to Milan Design Week this year with "HEMMA gone wild" a sequel to the 2018 exhibition, "HEMMA - Stories of Home". During the exhibition between April 9 och 14, Swedish designers and design companies will show their work in this official Swedish exhibition.

  • Save the date for the PARSE Conference November 13th to 15th

    [29 Mar 2019] Save the date November 13-15 for PARSE Research Conference. For the third time, just over 200 researchers and artists from all over the world gather to exchange knowledge and ideas, maintain and make new contacts and jointly strengthen artistic research.
