Our two departments

The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts offers programmes and research in artistic subjects. We collaborate with the Faculty of Education on teacher education in the arts and crafts, as well as on research in arts education.

In January 2020 our two departments Valand Academy and Academy of Design and Crafts, HDK, will merge and form a new department for art and design; HDK-Valand.

HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design

Education and research in Design, Film, Photography, Fine Art, Crafts and Literary Composition – as well as teacher education in Visual Arts and Sloyd.

HDK-Valand is locaded in Gothenburg and at Campus Steneby, in Dals Långed.

HDK-Valand started January 2020, whith the merger of our two departments Valand Academy and HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts.

Academy of Music and Drama

Music in many different genres, composition, opera, musical theatre, performance and acting. We also have teacher education in Music, Dance and Drama.

Campus Steneby

Campus Steneby is a creative cultural and educational environment in Dals Långed, 170 kilometers north of Gothenburg. It is a part of HDK-Valand.


  • Opera student receives large scholarship from Anders Walls Foundation

    [20 Feb 2020] Brittish student Madeleine Allsop (b. 1996) has received the Anders Walls Confidencen scholarship of SEK 100.000. Madeleine is a sopraon and master student in opera at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg, where she studies under Åsa Bäverstam.

  • Ageing and sustainability in HDK-Valands stands at the Furniture Fair

    [31 Jan 2020] HDK-Valand participates with two exhibitions at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair on February 4¿8. Through the projects, the students have explored how design can be used to investigate aspects of social and environmental sustainability.

  • Towels for Sustainability

    [16 Oct 2019] Sustainability is a concept that is well established and widespread in Sweden, but that is not necessarily the case everywhere else in the world. With the hope of spreading some of the Swedish environmental awareness to the university¿s international guests, Welcome Services decided to create a kitchen towel with a message giving tips on how to find a more sustainable lifestyle.

  • Alumni from HDK winner in the Adobe Awards 2019

    [22 Aug 2019] Anna Pers Bräcke who graduated with a bachelor's degree in design at HDK 2018 stand as winner in Adobe Awards illustrations category. Congratulations to Anna!
