Our two departments

The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts offers programmes and research in artistic subjects. We collaborate with the Faculty of Education on teacher education in the arts and crafts, as well as on research in arts education.

In January 2020 our two departments Valand Academy and Academy of Design and Crafts, HDK, will merge and form a new department for art and design; HDK-Valand.

HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design

Education and research in Design, Film, Photography, Fine Art, Crafts and Literary Composition – as well as teacher education in Visual Arts and Sloyd.

HDK-Valand is locaded in Gothenburg and at Campus Steneby, in Dals Långed.

HDK-Valand started January 2020, whith the merger of our two departments Valand Academy and HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts.

Academy of Music and Drama

Music in many different genres, composition, opera, musical theatre, performance and acting. We also have teacher education in Music, Dance and Drama.

Campus Steneby

Campus Steneby is a creative cultural and educational environment in Dals Långed, 170 kilometers north of Gothenburg. It is a part of HDK-Valand.


  • Children can influence the design process on their own terms

    [4 Jun 2020] How can openness and ambiguity help to develop collaborative design processes where both adults and children are involved on equal terms? On June 8, Annelies Vaneycken will defend her thesis in Design.

  • HDK-Valand shows exam projects online

    [3 Jun 2020] On June 12 at 13:00, HDK-Valand will launch a digital platform for this year's exam projects. Through the platform, graduate students will have the opportunity to show their work, which is usually done within the framework of the exam exhibitions.

  • HDK-Valand opens workshops for a limited number of final-year students

    [16 Apr 2020] HDK-Valand will open parts of the premises for a limited number of final year students so that they can complete unfinished projects and be examined in the spring term. Only a few students and technicians will be allowed on the premises at the same time and they must follow specially developed safety regulations.

  • Opera student receives large scholarship from Anders Walls Foundation

    [20 Feb 2020] Brittish student Madeleine Allsop (b. 1996) has received the Anders Walls Confidencen scholarship of SEK 100.000. Madeleine is a sopraon and master student in opera at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg, where she studies under Åsa Bäverstam.
